‘Trainwreck’ Review: Starring Amy Schumer, Bill Hader & LeBron James

It’s official: Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow are a new force to be reckoned with. The talented comedienne and director have crafted a film for the new generation that is honest, hilarious and emotional. It’s the summer’s first great R-rated comedy and it’s certainly far from a train wreck. After Trainwreck, Schumer will have the ability to sign on to whatever she wants and here’s hoping this film will elevate her career and gain her more fans.

Ever since she was a little girl, Amy was taught by her loving but erratic father (Colin Quinn) that monogamy isn’t realistic. Amy (Amy Schumer) is a smart career-focused woman, but fears a committed relationship more than anything else. Her best friend and colleague Nikki (Vanessa Bayer) supports her lifestyle of just having fun while her married younger sister Kim (Brie Larson) wishes she would try a serious relationship.

When Amy’s boss Dianna (Tilda Swinton) assigns her to a sports profile story highlighting renowned sports doctor Aaron Conners (Bill Hader), Amy agrees to go out for a drink with him and the night turns into going back to Aaron’s place. Thinking it was just going to be a one-night stand, Amy is surprised the next day when Aaron calls her wanting to go back out. But in turn, Amy surprises herself that she actually wants to. Could Amy be breaking her pattern by falling for Aaron and committing to a serious relationship?

Amy Schumer has already proven her comedic talents and writing with Comedy Central’s “Inside Amy Schumer” and selling out crowds during her stand-up tour, but with both writing and starring in Trainwreck, this is truly her breakout role. Schumer has a natural and likable presence on screen. Perhaps she is playing a version of herself in this role, but nevertheless she is perfect as our star.

Schumer and Hader have a surprisingly electric chemistry and these two actors penned a modern New York City love story. Yes, the film does have its R-rated laughs and raunchiness, but overall this is a romantic and emotional story that is relatable for both women and men. What makes Trainwreck rise above your typical R-rated comedy that is full of laughs, is the emotional core we find in our lead character Amy. Amy has an incredible and believable character arc and it has us laughing hysterically one minute and tearing up in the next. It’s a perfect blend of comedy with a couple of emotional pulls that center the story.

The supporting cast of this film is incredible including a super-fun and unforgettable performance by LeBron James, who plays himself in the film as one of Aaron’s clients. Who knew the star athlete would also be such an amazing actor? James and Hader are perfect as best friends and portray a realistic friendship when one friend jumps into a relationship, while the other tries to provide advice. Tilda Swinton is excellent as Amy’s stern and tough boss and Brie Larson is approachable and sweet as Amy’s younger sister. It’s too bad Vanessa Bayer didn’t get more screen time, but what we do get from her is priceless.

Amy Schumer has struck gold with Trainwreck and Judd Apatow has found a new comedic muse. It’s refreshing to see a female led comedy that is starring someone other than the fantastic Melissa McCarthy for once! Trainwreck is a modern day love story; a coming of age tale for this generation and it’s just down right funny. Amy Schumer, welcome to the movies.
