‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ Review: Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega & Harrison Ford

One word: wow. It’s impossible to encompass one’s feelings after seeing the new Star Wars film in theatres, but wow can begin to describe it. Director JJ Abrams directed the seventh episode of the Star Wars franchise and it’s all kinds of awesome, shocking and amazing. It brings us back to the original Star Wars charm of episodes four through six by revisiting our favorite characters but also introducing some fantastic new ones to brighten the franchise. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will reignite the passion of the franchise for diehard fans while also bring new fans on to love the story.

Set 30 years after Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens introduces us to a new evil power and an unlikely duo that is destined to fight it. Desert scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley) meets an orange and white droid named BB 8 near her home on the planet Jakku. As Rey and BB 8 pal around, they have to fight off robbers that try to steal him for parts and that’s when Finn (John Boyega) happens to meet them. Finn is actually an ex Storm Trooper who escaped the First Order led by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), a former Jedi turned to the dark side. Finn assists Rey in getting BB 8 back to the Resistance since he knows there is a valuable piece of information that the droid is carrying.

As Rey and Finn are running from the First Order, they cross paths with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his trusted co-pilot and wookie Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew). Han and Chewy aid in helping the two run aboard the Millennium Falcon while Leia (Carrie Fisher) is now the General of the military resistance.  Are Han and Leia still as close as they were at the end of Return of the Jedi? Will Rey and Finn get BB 8 back to the resistance and help them? And the question that has plagued everyone, where is Luke Skywalker?

The cast is full of incredible actors who also include Oscar Isaac as the fearless fighter pilot Poe, Domhnall Gleeson as First Order leader General Hux, Gwendoline Christie as Kylo Ren’s menacing Captain Phasma and Lupita N’yongo who motion captures the wise Maz Kanata.

J.J. Abrams pairs practical effects with CGI to create his masterpiece that is Episode VII. And his film is easily the best Star Wars film since 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. Talk about a major achievement to revamp the franchise and make it better than ever. Bravo Abrams! The action sequences are non-stop and there is nothing like seeing the Millennium Falcon fly on the big screen. The two-hour – sixteen minute long film feels like 45 minutes as the most.

It’s amazing to see the classic characters meet again on the big screen, but that’s not even the best part about The Force Awakens, it’s Daisy Ridley and John Boyega as our new starring characters. Ridley carries an on-screen presence that veteran actors dream of achieving. She does use her natural English accent in the film, which is beautiful and strangely adds a refreshing touch to the franchise. She is unlike any Star Wars character before her and it will be interesting to see where the other films will take her. John Boyega on the other hand is an English actor but uses an American accent in the film and it’s absolutely flawless! His character is young, fun and surprising considering how he turns from the dark side to the light. Boyega is exactly the type of male lead this franchise needs to keep it upbeat for the following films.

Abrams did not shoot the film in 3D but he did shoot some of the scenes in 65mm, so it is worth it to see the film on the largest screen you can find in the area. I will personally be seeing the film again at the Lockheed Martin theatre in DC! Probably the best screen to see it on the DC area!

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is the best film of the franchise since 1980 and quite possibly my favorite film of the franchise! That’s not insane it’s the honest truth!
