‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ Review: Intense Action, Witty Dialogue, All-Around Badass

If you’re not a fan of Joss Whedon, you will be after this movie. Marvel’s The Avengers¬†was written and directed by someone who is passionate about movies, superheroes, science fiction and action sequences. And let’s not forget that Whedon is the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my favorite superhero of all-time!

What’s unique about this superhero story, is the fact that Whedon fulfills every Marvel comic book nerd’s dream, while also making it an enjoyable film experience for people who have never even picked up a comic book.

Most of my knowledge of Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and The Hulk all comes from the recent Marvel movies and it’s incredible (no pun intended) to see them all on the big screen together! The Avengers is the perfect way to kick off summer and jump right into an action packed movie event.

Whedon gives each character equal screen time, doing justice to all Marvel hero fans. Whether you’re a fan of Thor or Iron Man, The Avengers showcases each of these famous characters like it should. Though, the true star of the film is Mark Ruffalo, who beautifully captures the sensitivity of Bruce Banner and turns him into a gentle giant-like figure as The Hulk, through motion capture technology. Eric Bana and Edward Norton didn’t do the character justice, but Ruffalo takes the green machine to a whole other level and I really believe he was made for this role! I wanted to give him a hug after the movie was over, even though he could break me with one crunch!

The semigod from Asgard, (Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth), a sexy power soldier (Captain America, played by Chris Evans), a playboy billionaire (Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr.), a scientist who gets mean and green (The Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo) and two super assassins (Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson and Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner), team up to save the world.

Thor’s brother Loki (scene stealer Tom Hiddleston) opens up a portal, which enables him to come down to Earth and wreak havoc among the human population. S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury brings the group of superheroes together in order to save the planet from the destructive Loki.

Some of the dialogue scenes are completely unnecessary, and at times boring. The plot is convoluted and at times I found myself wondering what the heck was actually going on! The plot between Black Widow and Hawkeye was out of place and their characters are not portrayed nearly as badass as the others.

What the film lacks for in the plot, it makes up with the intense action sequences that will make your jaw drop, heart pound and cause major geeking out in your seat! Even though the film was not shot in 3D, the conversion is fantastic and adds to the cinematic event. Skip the IMAX 3D and buy yourself a regular 3D ticket, since the film was not shot in IMAX either.

The Avengers certainly lives up to all the hype and brings out the geek in all of us.

Check out my ultimate geek-out video below, where Joss Whedon has a special message for me! Kevin McCarthy and I traveled to LA to attend the press screening for The Avengers. He sat down with Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston and Joss Whedon!
