“A Royal Affair” tells the true story of a young queen (Alicia Vikander), who is married to a (literally) insane king (Mikkel Boe Folsgaard). With obvious struggles in their marriage, the queen ends up falling in love with the king’s physician, Johann (Mads Mikkelsen) and the two start a revolution that changes Denmark for the better.
It should also be noted that “A Royal Affair” is one of the best foreign language films of the year because of its captivating story and surprising break-out performance by Alicia Vikander. The cinematography by Rasmus Videbaek is breathtaking. 4/5 Stars.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with director/writer Nikolaj Arcel and co-writer Rasmus Heisterberg to discuss their film, playing in select cities November 16, 2012.
Arcel, Heisterberg and I discuss the process of adapted this historical story into a screenplay and what its like to work with famed Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (“Casino Royale”).
