With his recent praise in the espionage thriller, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, I thought I would give a shout out to Gary Oldman and recognize some of his most memorable performances. Oldman is the most underrated actor of our time and I think he deserves a little more spotlight if I should say so!
Sid Vicious in Sid & Nancy (1986)- His performance as the lead singer of British band The Sex Pistols was the start of his career and one of his finest performances.
Rosencrantz in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990)- I’m a huge Shakespeare fan, so of course this movie stands out for me. R & G is from the perspective of two minor characters in Hamlet. In the original play, both characters were dispatched offstage before the conclusion, however in the film the two take centerstage and Oldman is brilliant!
Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK (1991)- A small, but pivotal role in the film, Oldman plays JFK’s assassin.
Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)- Creepy, seductive and an emotional performance by Oldman as the most famous vampire of all time.
Drexl Spivery in True Romance (1993)- A villianous pimp and cocaine dealer, what actor wouldn’t have fun with this role? Oldman nailed it.
Ludwig van Beethoven in Immortal Beloved (1994)- Not necessarily a critic favorite, but Oldman’s portrayal of the damaged, yet talent Beethoven is unforgettable.
Ivan Korshunov in Air Force One (1997)- As the lead terrorist who is holding the President hostage, Oldman never fails to create thrills in the popular action flick.
Sirius Black in the Harry Potter Series (2004)- I always wonder what actor would end up playing Harry’s godfather and only family member and I was thrilled when Oldman joined the British cast. He played the part just as I imagined Black in the book and really was a dream come true.
Jim Gordon in the Batman Series (2005)- I liked Jim Gordon better than any character in the films, even the Joker. Yea, I said it. The Dark Knight Rises is set to release Summer 2012.
Lord Shen in Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)- Oldman plays one badass peacock in the second installment of Kung Fu Panda and boy is he scary! This man can do anything!
