‘About Last Night’ Review: Starring Michael Ealy, Kevin Hart & Regina Hall

Kevin Hart is one of the funniest actors and comedians in Hollywood. For someone who usually isn’t a fan of stand-up comedy, I thoroughly enjoyed his film last year titled Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain and he always manages to steal every scene he’s in. The main problem in About Last Night, is that there’s not enough focus on Kevin Hart’s character! Hart fans will really enjoy the film, but will wish he were in it more.

About Last Night is a remake of the 1986 film of the same name starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. This modern romantic comedy is set in Los Angeles and follows two couples: Danny (Michael Ealy) and Debbie (Joy Bryant), and Bernie (Kevin Hart) and Joan (Regina Hall).

Danny and Debbie are more traditional in their relationship, while Bernie and Joan are more wild and passionate. As Danny and Debbie begin to get more serious, Bernie and Joan begin having problems and eventually break up. So when Debbie breaks the news to Joan that she is moving in with Danny, Joan doesn’t take the news to lightly and drama ensues between the four friends.

Although much of the dialogue is cheesy and cliché, the screenplay does a decent job of balancing the romantic storyline and comedic/raunchy elements throughout the film. As much as I love to look at Michael Ealy, the highlights of the film come through Kevin Hart and Regina Hall, who is the far more interesting pair in the movie. Their chemistry is on-point and they have the funniest scenes in the movie. The Halloween party scene where Kevin Hart is dressed up as Magic Mike is definitely a memorable one.

It was hard to concentrate and root for Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant’s characters because he wasn’t the most likable boyfriend and she came off as an annoying, controlling girlfriend. I know I wasn’t the only audience member that was getting tired of their bickering fights and forced dialogue.

Kevin Hart is giving the movie studios exactly what they want right now. They know that he’s universally popular and more importantly, can bring in big bucks to the box office. I adore Kevin Hart and his scenes are easily the best in the movie, he really gets show his comedic range in this R-rated film. I just wish that there were more focus on his and Regina Hall’s characters!

About Last Night is definitely more of a guy’s film, as it has some fun bromance scenes between Michael Ealy and Kevin Hart, but at time suffers from forced dialogue and clichéd plot devices.
